The keyboard work on “Get Up And Dance,” the latest single from the British outfit Man/Woman/Chainsaw, possesses a distinct, whistling quality that immediately commands attention. It is an eerie, entrancing introduction to a track that proves the band—already recognized as a formidable Band To Watch—is showing no signs of slowing down as they approach the release of their debut album, Cannonball.
Following a string of compelling advance tracks like “Only Girl,” “Nosedive,” and “Goddamn, Lizard Man!,” the group returns today with a song that defies the expectations set by its title. Featuring lead vocals from Emmie-Mae Avery, the track masterfully builds from a foundation of quiet, introspective intimacy into a state of expansive, high-energy splendor.
Avery recently shared some insight into the lyrical narrative driving the song, noting that the inspiration stems from a specific, tension-filled club setting:
In my mind it’s set in a club, where you spot someone who’s been trying their luck with different people all night and decide to turn the game back on them. It starts playful but then takes a forceful approach, as you push them to prove their interest and test how far they’ll go, aiming to have them make a fool of themselves.
While the song’s title might suggest a standard, carefree dance-floor filler, the reality is far more complex and subversive. It is a track that demands engagement, turning the tables on the typical club-goer dynamic with a sharp, lyrical edge.
Cannonball is scheduled for release on August 7 via Fiction.
