A New Chapter in Gabriel’s Creative Cycle
Following the monumental, two-decade-long gestation period that culminated in his 2023 studio album i/o, Peter Gabriel has adopted a markedly more accelerated creative pace. The legendary art-rock pioneer wasted little time in announcing his follow-up project, o\i, earlier this year. Since the initial reveal, Gabriel has maintained a consistent release schedule, unveiling a new track in alignment with each lunar cycle—a thematic approach that mirrors the release strategy of his previous record.
Following the release of “Been Undone,” “Put The Bucket Down,” and “What Lies Ahead,” Gabriel has now shared the latest installment from the project: “Till Your Mind Is Shining.” The track arrives during a period of heightened public interest in lunar events, further cementing the celestial motif that has come to define this current era of his career.
Exploring Pop Sensibilities and Roots
In a press release accompanying the new single, Gabriel offered rare insight into the track’s composition, describing it as the most accessible, pop-oriented material on the upcoming album. “To my ears it’s the closest I get to a pop song on this record,” Gabriel noted, highlighting the playful nature of the song’s foundational chord sequence.
The creative process for “Till Your Mind Is Shining” appears to be deeply rooted in nostalgia. Gabriel reflected on his formative years, noting that before the formation of Genesis, his primary ambition was to master the craft of songwriting, specifically within the realms of pop, soul, and R&B. “I think this song connects me back to some of those roots and the sort of thing that I was working on then and trying to master,” he explained.
The Evolution of a Song
Gabriel also touched upon his meticulous approach to songwriting, noting that many of the elements in this track have been in development for several years. He emphasized the importance of allowing compositions to “mature” before finalizing them. “I leave songs for a while and go and do something else and when I come back to them and they smell alive, I will want to complete them,” he said. The result is a track that he describes as a genuinely fun collaborative effort, featuring standout performances from his band.
The song began around a chord sequence which I liked and which felt quite poppy and playful, so I just kept on playing around with it till I had something. Of all the songs that I’ve written for i/o and o\i this is probably the poppiest for me.
It takes me back to my schooldays, in some ways, because before there was Genesis we were effectively trying to be songwriters more than musicians – pop songs or soul / R&B songs. I think this song connects me back to some of those roots and the sort of thing that I was working on then and trying to master.
Some elements of this are a few years old, I mean pretty much most things I work on take a while to mature. I leave songs for a while and go and do something else and when I come back to them and they smell alive, I will want to complete them. I really enjoyed singing this one, particularly the end, and I think the band had a good time playing it too. You can hear some wonderful performances from all the band. It was really a fun thing to create.
I’ve always been fascinated by explorations of consciousness and attempts to understand from where it originated, along with all the recent investigations into animal and plant sentience.
In some ways it’s about opening up the mind and stepping inside to understand a little more of ourselves and the world we live in with the hope that we respond a little more responsibly and compassionately.
Thematic Depth and Future Outlook
Beyond the musical structure, the song delves into philosophical territory. Gabriel expressed a long-standing fascination with the origins of consciousness and the growing scientific interest in plant and animal sentience. He views the track as a meditation on self-awareness and the necessity of approaching the world with increased responsibility and compassion.
As with his recent output, “Till Your Mind Is Shining” is available in multiple iterations, with the “Dark-Side Mix” by Tchad Blake serving as the primary introduction to the track. Listen to the official release below.
While fans continue to enjoy these monthly offerings, the release date for the full o\i album remains unconfirmed, suggesting that listeners will have to endure several more lunar cycles before the complete collection is unveiled.
