U2 Surprise Fans with New EP ‘Easter Lily’ Featuring Brian Eno

A Season of Surprise Releases

U2 has once again leaned into their penchant for the unexpected. Following the surprise release of their Ash Wednesday EP, Days Of Ash—which notably featured a collaboration with Ed Sheeran—the legendary Irish rock band has returned with another unannounced project. Titled Easter Lily, this new six-track EP arrives just in time for the holiday weekend, offering fans a fresh collection of music that continues the band’s recent streak of spontaneous output.

The EP is particularly notable for its closing track, which features a brand-new soundscape crafted by longtime collaborator and ambient pioneer Brian Eno. This partnership, which has defined some of the band’s most experimental eras, adds a layer of atmospheric depth to the project, signaling a continued interest in sonic exploration.

Bono on the ‘Wilderness Years’ and Artistic Resistance

In a statement accompanying the release, Bono provided insight into the band’s current creative headspace. He described the group as being deep in the studio, actively working toward a new album characterized by a “noisy, messy, and unreasonably colorful” aesthetic. For U2, the act of creating music remains a vital form of resistance against the overwhelming nature of modern digital life.

We are in the studio, still working towards a noisy, messy, “unreasonably colorful” album to play LIVE… which is where U2 lives. We still look to vivid rock n roll as an act of resistance against all this awfulness on our small screens. These are for sure “wilderness years” for so many of us looking at the mayhem out there in the world.

It’s a time that has our band digging deeper into our lives to find a wellspring of songs to try meet the moment… With Easter Lily we ended up asking very personal questions like: Are our own relationships up to these challenging times? How hard do you fight for friendship? Can our faith survive the mangling of meaning that those algorithms love to reward? Is all religion rubbish and still ripping us apart…? Or are there answers to find in its crevices? Are there ceremonies, rituals, dances that we might be missing in our lives? From the rite of Spring to Easter and its promise of rebirth and renewal… Patti Smith’s album Easter gave me so much hope when it was released in 1978. I wasn’t yet 18. The title is a nod to her.

We will attempt hoopla and fanfare at a later date to remind the rest of the world we exist but in the meantime… this is between you and us.

A Tribute to Hal Willner

Beyond the music itself, Easter Lily serves as a commemorative project. Much like their previous EP, this release includes a digital version of the band’s Propaganda zine, featuring personal contributions from all four members. The opening track, “Song for Hal,” serves as a poignant tribute to the late producer Hal Willner. Willner, who collaborated with U2 on several high-profile projects, would have celebrated his 70th birthday on Easter Monday, making the track a fitting homage to his enduring influence on the band’s creative process.
