Now that rap chatter is buzzing with both the East and West coast claiming titles, let’s not forget the South in this. The South got something to say too, as 3K said it — or more like, the ways in which J.I.D is saying it himself now. Gearing to drop an album, J.I.D has kicked things off with a music video for ‘WRK’.
The dystopian video takes us through a post-apocalypse world created by J.I.D, where is leading a resistance movement with other masked rebels. The revolution is against a group of people in hazmats, who seem to be destroying all musical equipment (potentially symbolising Black American culture) in a fire. In all this madness, a makeshift museum still stands, where classics like J.I.D’s albums are displayed alongside imagery invoking the American flag.
J.I.D himself, in fact, has a torn flag around his waist as he delivers his performance shots. The video cuts back and forth between the story and performance, with VHS overlays and edits one would expect from a high-powered J.I.D song. He’s certainly here to remind anyone that’s counting him out of a conversation he’s been in for years. What do you think?
