Philadelphia glitch masters Cold Court are back with their latest single, “Cola.” This release serves as the final preview from their forthcoming EP, \ (^_^) /, which is set to arrive this Friday. The track follows the previously released singles “Burn” and “Backslang,” rounding out a project that promises to be as sonically adventurous as it is emotionally resonant.
“Cola” holds a special significance for the group, marking the final composition that Mini Serrano and Jojo Lavina-Maldonado worked on together for this project. The track is characterized by shrill, shredded piano textures woven into a foundation of thick-necked synth work that recalls the high-energy production style of Justice. The result is a soundscape as vivid and layered as an abstract impressionist painting.
Reflecting on the creative philosophy behind the EP, Jojo Lavina-Maldonado noted that the duo sought to break free from traditional constraints. “We created without inhibition or concern for genre or era,” Jojo explained in a press release. “We approached it more like a painting. We didn’t want to be another band; we wanted to be Basquiat. We were in our neo-expressionism bag.”
\ (^_^) / is scheduled for a self-released launch on June 19.
