A New Chapter for The Pixies
Music fans have reason to celebrate as the legendary alternative rock band, The Pixies, prepares for the release of their latest studio album, Doggerel, slated for late September. However, the path to this new record was far from certain. In a candid conversation with NME, frontman Black Francis revealed that the pressures of the industry and the global uncertainty of the last few years nearly led him to walk away from his musical career entirely.
The Peace of Seclusion
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Francis found himself living in relative seclusion. Stripped of the relentless cycle of touring, writing, and recording, he discovered a profound sense of peace in the mundane. Rather than focusing on his next creative endeavor, he turned his attention to a surprising new passion: raising chickens.
“I was raising chickens and hanging out with my teenagers for a year and a half, and I wasn’t necessarily excited about going back into the world, ’cause everything finally stopped and slowed down, and I was able to enjoy a few simple things in my life for the first time. The whole end-of-the-world atmosphere aside, there was a lot of it that felt really good.”
Finding the Balance
As the world began to normalize in early 2022, Francis faced a difficult internal conflict. He was torn between the quiet, grounded life he had cultivated and the high-profile, demanding career he had spent decades building. The transition back to the public eye was not immediate.
Approximately one month before the band was scheduled to reunite, Francis retreated to his personal sanctuary—a space he refers to as his painting room. Describing it as “like a monk’s quarters with art supplies,” he noted that it served as a vital “Dad’s Zone” where he could focus without interruption. It was within this private space that the creative spark returned. He began writing and recording demos on his phone, eventually amassing a collection of material that left him more prepared for a recording session than he had ever been in his storied career.
Looking Ahead
With the creative process behind Doggerel now complete, the band is ready to re-enter the spotlight. The record stands as a testament to the balance Francis found between his domestic life and his artistic drive. As fans await the September release, it is clear that while the chickens may have provided a necessary respite, the music remains an essential part of the frontman’s identity.
