The upcoming Canadian indie rock rom-com Mile End Kicks is set to arrive this Friday, bringing with it a soundtrack that leans heavily into the nation’s rich musical heritage. Starring Barbie Ferreira, the film has already garnered attention for its trailer, which featured MGMT’s “Time To Pretend.” Now, the production has revealed a standout musical contribution: a cover of Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill anthem “Ironic,” performed by none other than Avril Lavigne.
The film’s official Instagram account announced the track with a nod to the shared Canadian roots of both artists, stating, “From one Canadian icon to another…. may we introduce: Avril Lavigne’s cover of ‘Ironic’ by Alanis Morissette!” While both singers hail from Ontario, their paths have crossed before; most notably, Lavigne joined Morissette for a memorable live duet of the same song at the House Of Blues in Los Angeles back in 2005.
This latest rendition arrives shortly after Morissette herself performed the classic track on Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney last year. Lavigne’s involvement adds a layer of pop-punk nostalgia to the film, further cementing her status as a Canadian cultural staple—a legacy recognized when she was appointed to the Order of Canada.
