Jack White Joins Stephen Colbert for Surprise ‘Only In Monroe’ Finale

On Thursday, May 21, Stephen Colbert hosted the final episode of The Late Show. During his monologue, the host reflected on his 2015 appearance on the Michigan public access station Only In Monroe, where he famously performed a test run of his late-night show for an audience of just 12 people, featuring a guest appearance by Eminem. “Show business being what it is these days, that’s probably where you’ll see me next,” he quipped, a sentiment he made reality just one day later.

The late-night veteran reclaimed the 11:35 p.m. time slot, albeit on a much smaller stage. The broadcast featured show hosts Michelle Baumann and Kaye Lani Rae Rafko Wilson, with Jack White serving as the music director. The hour-long special also included appearances by actors Steve Buscemi and Jeff Daniels.

The broadcast was characteristically chaotic and memorable. Colbert famously inhaled helium to perform a rendition of The White Stripes’ “Fell In Love With A Girl” and shared a hot dog with White. The hour concluded with the destruction of the makeshift set, with Marshall Mathers—better known as Eminem—appearing via video as “the fire marshal” to authorize the burning of the set’s remnants in a dumpster. (In a bizarre turn of events, Donald Trump later shared an AI-generated video on social media depicting himself throwing Colbert into a similar dumpster.)

Following the broadcast, Jack White took to Instagram to share his support for the host, writing, “America needs to give a standing ovation for this man tonight. God Bless Stephen, it is absolutely ridiculous that we live in a country where a President’s ego can vindictively censor network television… and nobody stops him. Carry on down your new paths with your head held high sir. You’ve told the truth and given us so much to laugh at, and we’re expecting even more in the future. Thank you.”
